Hi everyone,
Welcome to “Learn French, Become Français” with Ruben! Welcome, almost-French . Before we begin, I want to thank all my listeners. Thank you!
The transcript for this episode is in the description.
In this episode, we're going to talk about French eating habits. Food what?
Food is something we eat. A croissant is food, pasta is food, rice is food.
When we talk about eating habits, we're talking about what we eat often!
So, do French people often eat snails and frogs?
The last time I ate snails was over 10 years ago, and to be honest, I didn't really like them. The texture is too weird.
As for frogs, I ate them when I was in Vietnam four months ago, and yes, it's not just the French who eat frogs! I'd say that frogs taste very similar to chicken, and have a similar texture too.
Today we're not going to talk about the weird foods that French people sometimes eat, but rather what they eat often!
In a moment you'll discover the eating habits of average French people.
Are you ready? Let's go!
In the morning, for breakfast, the French almost always eat the same thing, often coffee or tea for adults and hot chocolate for children, with tartines, which are slices of bread with butter and jam. We spread jam, cheese, or honey on the bread.
There are lots of different kinds of jam: strawberry jam, apricot jam, raspberry jam. My parents even make homemade orange jam! They make it themselves.
You can also put honey on toast (honey is the sweet substance made by bees, bees are the insects that go bzzzzz) and you can also spread Nutella on bread! Most French people eat toast every day, but not necessarily croissants or pains au chocolat! They don't eat croissants or pains au chocolat every day! However, many drink orange juice every morning for breakfast. When I was at university, I usually just had toast with butter and jam because I didn't have enough money to eat anything else in the morning. In general, French people don't eat anything savory in the morning, but now I eat bread with cheese, and even rice sometimes.
Did you know that the French eat a lot of pasta? Especially young people? The first food the French learn to cook is pasta! Yes, really! We usually make pasta Bolognese with tomato sauce and ground beef, but we often don't put the famous Italian cheese on top! Instead of Parmesan, they use a French cheese called Emmental, which the French love. In addition to pasta Bolognese, they also make pasta carbonara... French style, of course!
Have you ever eaten pasta carbonara? If so, you know that it contains egg.
French-style pasta carbonara does not contain egg! So how do we make it creamy? Well, with cream, of course! To make French-style carbonara pasta, you need pasta, cream, onions, garlic, and lardons, which are similar to bacon but much smaller.
