In this episode I am going to talk to you about a piece of news. This news is about public holidays. What is a public holiday? A public holiday is a special day on the calendar for all French people. During a public holiday something is celebrated such as Christmas New Year’s or the end of a war.
On a public holiday many stores are closed children do not go to school and workers do not go to work. In the United States of America the most well known public holiday is Thanksgiving.
In France there are 11 public holidays. The first is January 1st New Year’s Day and the last is December 25th Christmas.
Are you ready? I will first read slowly one time then I will explain in detail and then I will read a bit faster the second time.
Prime Minister François Bayrou has decided that there are too many public holidays. Yet we have fewer public holidays than many European countries Romania has 14 public holidays Croatia also and the island of Cyprus a small country to the southeast of Greece even has 15 public holidays per year.
The prime minister has announced that he wants to remove 2 public holidays so France would go from 11 public holidays to 9 per year just like the European countries with the fewest public holidays Germany Denmark and the Netherlands.
According to the prime minister removing these two public holidays would save France more than 400 billion euros.
Which public holidays does the prime minister want to remove? He announced that it will be Easter Monday and May 8th. Easter Monday is a holiday in all European countries except Portugal. As we saw in the previous episode many European traditions take place during Easter Monday. May 8th celebrates the end of the war in 1945 it is a very important date for the French.
Did you understand everything?
If you didn’t understand everything, it’s okay, we’ll go back through each sentence together and I’ll explain in detail.
